Over the last several years we have seen a decline in the amount of cash value insurance being purchased by affluent investors (individuals with 100k—999k of financial assets) and high net worth individuals and families (over the $1 million mark). Most of this can be attributed to the increase in estate tax exemptions over the years. With concerns over estate taxes being diminished for some of this market they have been relying more on their investment portfolios than insurance solutions. Life insurance companies have recognized this downward trend and have been developing new and unique products designed to have a greater appeal to the affluent marketplace. Products that are linked to various stock market indexes and that offer living benefits are more attractive to this type of consumer as many of them hold a large amount of funds in different investment accounts.
